Gotham Green Guide
Green Living in New York City
Dedicated to the Vision of a Big Green Apple
And a Kinder, Gentler, More Beautiful World
New York City is legend for its vast suffocating infrastructure as much as it is loved for its living diversity. Like any mega-city, it has the potential to be a true utopian community. Most of the day to day agony and gridlock misery experienced in New York has more to do with how New Yorkers live than the mere number of people packed together. There is also that great excess of concrete with inadequate green blocks other than those 850 acres called Central Park and scattered smaller parks here and there.

Gotham Green Guide will develop as an online network to all the hundreds of green resources that any resident or visitor to New York can use. GGG will thus serve not only by informing you of existing green resources but also by promoting a greener future and a more utopian, heavenly, cleaner and closer-to-God urban infrastructure concept for all new milleniums to come.

How You Can Help
Please provide the names of any leading green resource or business within any of New York City's five burroughs, especially those in Manhattan. Concerns which have a domain or web address will receive highest priority. These may include:

  • Vegetarian and animal rights organizations and groups;
  • Restaurants and eateries which serve basic slaughter-free food exclusively. What we mean by this is no meat, no poultry, no fish. We are mildly interested in meat restaurants with sideline vegetarian menus and might list a few if they are exceptional;
  • Cruelty-free grocery stores serving no-slaughter products exclusively and natural food stores which serve mostly no-slaughter products. Total veggie grocers will obviously receive priority;
  • Major cruelty-free medical resources such as hospitals which provide vegatarian meals almost exclusively. Conventional medical facilities which offer licensed and certified medical practice with high concern toward slaughter-free medicines. Seventh Day Adventist medical facilities are of particular interest for serving meals which are almost slaughter free. We are NOT interested in listing but very few if any of the "new age", "pagan" and "alchemy" resources as there is a fine line between alternative wonders and quackery. We might make exception to some of the best of these alternative resources if they rise to being a state certified medical center. A limited number of the more major NYC Ayurvedic resouces will probably be listed since this body of knowledge is all or mostly involved with non-violent medicine;
  • Cruelty-free churches and spiritual organizations promoting moral vegetarianism and nonviolence toward animals through compassionate consumerism. Focus will be on listing with little or no regard to the intricacies of ideological belief other than a deep belief in compassion toward animals. Most notably you will find listings for ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness), Seventh Day Adventist, possibly assorted Hindu and other normally animal-compassionate religious groups. Of special interest are any spiritual groups that serve regular feasts open to the public or provide vegetarian meals to the homeless or disadvantaged;
  • Vegetarian natural juice bars and O2 bars.
  • Night clubs which are totally heaven-bent smoke-free, ie you can't smoke there on any night of the week;
  • Bicycle associations, clubs, publications and retailers esp. with domain name web addresses;
  • Green motoring resources including:
    • Local companies that make electric or hybrid electric/gas vehicles or provide conversions;
    • Natural gas filling stations;
    • Local govt. programs promoting green vehicle usage;
    • Car pooling networks and traffic report resources;
    • Local publications for bicycling and green motoring;
  • Gardening and Botanical resources including:
    • Leading and long-standing gardening clubs and botanical societies;
    • Local publications promoting gardening;
  • Park related concerns including:
    • Any web addresses for NYC parks or specific NYC parks
    • Any online groups (with domain names) devoted to creating NEW parks. We are not interested in groups that just get together for park outings.
  • Major online NYC recycling associations and activist resources. We will not list specific scrap and salvage companies as there are too many;
  • Leading green groups involved in any of the above interests
  • Major green heroes of contemporary and historical New York.
